1. Why do the images I send look a little fuzzier when my friends receive them?

JotSmart uses a compression algorithm that is lossy. That is, in order to compress the image to a small size and thus decrease the amount of time it takes to send and receive the message, some of the images quality is lost. In most instances, this should not be a problem.

Future versions of JotSmart may allow you select the quality of the image that is sent.

2. How can Yahoo!Mail recipients view the annotated images in the messages that I send?

Yahoo!Mail users can receive inline images in one of two ways:

  1. They must configure the browser correctly. Yahoo!Mail site may have help information available at:

  2. http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/read/read-16.html

  3. Use one of the HTML compatible e-mail programs:

    • Netscape Messenger

    • Microsoft Outlook 97, 98, and 2000

    • Outlook Express (IE 5.0 or higher)

    • Eudora Pro (Version 4.01 or higher)

    • PocoMail (2.5 or higher)

    • Lotus Notes R5 (or higher)

More information on how to set up these programs for use with Yahoo!Mail may be available at:

                 http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/read/read-08.html

Note - Yahoo!Mail may have restrictions on the allowed file size of attachments and messages.

3. How do I setup my e-mail program to display images in the message that I receive?

In order to view images inside the messages you receive (instead of as attachments), you must set up your e-mail program to display the images "inline". Each program has it's own setup method. Here is what we have found.  Please consult the respective program's help file for specific setup instructions:

Eudora Pro V:
Select the following items:
        1. Tools menu
        2. Options...
        3. Styled Text
        4. Make sure that either
           a. "Send both plain and styled text"
                ...or...
           b. "Send styled text" are selected
(note: do NOT select "Send plain text only")

Netscape 4.76 Messenger:
Select the following items:
        1. View menu
        2. View Attachments Inline

Outlook Express 5.5:
Select the following items:
        1. Tools menu
        2. Options...

Outlook 2000:
Select the following items:
        1. Tools menu
        2. Options... menu
        3. Mail Format tab
        4. Settings...
        5. Make sure MIME is enabled in the settings box

PocoMail 2.5:
Select the following items:
        1. Tools menu
        2. Options... menu
        3. Reading Mail item
        4. Make sure "Show supported attachments in-line" is enabled

Also note that the following e-mail programs are currently unable to display annotated images inline, but they do accept images as attached files:

  • AOL mail 5.0 or later
  • Hotmail (viewed using a Web browser)
  • Yahoo!Mail (viewed using a Web browser)

Other e-mail programs may also be capable of receiving the annotated images as attached files. In most instances you cannot see the contents of the attachment until you open these files with a program that knows how to display the image. Most of the time, this involves nothing more than double clicking the name of the attached file.

4. I'm using AOL... Why won't the images show up in the messages? (i.e. they only appear in an attachment).

AOL versions prior to v6.0 are NOT HTML based. The main AOL mail server strips outgoing and incoming files of any inline images. These images file (attached audio files too) are sometimes compressed into a .ZIP file that is then attached to the message. The recipient must first unzip the file and then view the images with either their browser or a graphic viewer.
